Our Sailing Basics program is designed for beginners eager to learn the core skills of sailing. Through hands-on lessons on a J/24 keelboat, you’ll master fundamental techniques, including wind direction, sail trimming, steering, and essential maneuvers. This program builds a strong sailing foundation, perfect for aspiring sailors and future racers alike.
The Breakdown: Sessions 1-4
SESSION 1: Orientation, Safety & Basics
- 3 Hours
- Up to 3 students
Begin with essential safety practices and boat preparation. Learn correct seating, steering fundamentals, and sail trim basics. Practice adjusting sails, balancing the boat, and understanding telltales for optimal sailing. End with a debrief to review progress and areas to improve.
SESSION 2: Maneuvering & Control
- 3 Hours
- Up to 3 students
Build foundational skills with a focus on safe navigation and precise maneuvering. Practice heading up, bearing off, and adjusting sails for stability. Learn basic tacking techniques and steer to avoid hazards. End with a debrief to review progress and provide personalized feedback.
SESSION 3: Advanced Techniques
- 3 Hours

Master refined tacking, gybing, and boat control techniques. Practice smooth transitions, coordinated crew communication, and steering for controlled gybes. Learn to stop and accelerate the boat effectively for greater precision. End with a debrief to review progress and refine techniques.

Demonstrate independence by rigging the boat and identifying wind direction. Refine teamwork and communication while practicing advanced maneuvers.
